Yuzawa Is Closer Than You Think

One of the great appeals of Yuzawa as a ski destination is its accessibility from Tokyo. Sitting just over 200 km north of the capital, Yuzawa is reachable in under 80 minutes by Shinkansen — making it genuinely feasible as a day trip, though a multi-night stay is strongly recommended to make the most of the mountains and onsen.

Option 1: Shinkansen (Fastest & Most Convenient)

The Joetsu Shinkansen connects Tokyo directly to Echigo-Yuzawa Station with no transfers required. This is by far the most popular and practical way to travel.

  • Departure station: Tokyo Station or Omiya Station
  • Arrival station: Echigo-Yuzawa Station
  • Journey time: Approximately 75–80 minutes from Tokyo
  • Trains: Toki and Tanigawa services; Tanigawa is usually the faster option stopping at Yuzawa
  • Frequency: Roughly every 20–30 minutes during peak hours

Booking tip: Use the JR East website or a travel agent to reserve seats in advance during the winter season. Unreserved cars exist but fill quickly on Friday evenings and weekend mornings.

If you hold a JR Pass, the Joetsu Shinkansen is fully covered — a significant saving, especially for international visitors already holding a national pass.

Option 2: Highway Bus (Budget Option)

Several highway bus services operate between Tokyo (Shinjuku or Tokyo Station) and Yuzawa during the ski season. The journey takes considerably longer — roughly 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic — but the cost is noticeably lower than the Shinkansen.

  • Best for: Budget travellers, groups travelling with large amounts of gear
  • Considerations: Longer journey, potentially affected by weather delays, limited luggage space
  • Booking: Services like Willer Express and Japan Bus Online accept online reservations

Option 3: Driving by Car

Driving to Yuzawa from Tokyo via the Kan-Etsu Expressway takes approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. The Yuzawa IC (interchange) exits are well-signed and place you close to the major resort areas.

  • Best for: Families with young children, groups carrying lots of ski equipment
  • Important: Winter tyres or tyre chains are legally required (and practically essential) on mountain roads. Many rental car companies in the Tokyo area offer winter-equipped vehicles.
  • Parking: Most hotels and resorts have free or low-cost parking on-site

Getting from Echigo-Yuzawa Station to Your Resort

Once you arrive at Echigo-Yuzawa Station, reaching your resort is straightforward:

  1. Hotel shuttle buses: Most hotels — including New Otani — run free shuttles from the station. Confirm times with your accommodation in advance.
  2. GALA Yuzawa: Uniquely, GALA has its own dedicated Shinkansen station (Gala-Yuzawa), operating only during the ski season — you can step off the bullet train and be at the gondola within minutes.
  3. Taxi: Taxis are available outside the station. Journey times to most resorts are under 15 minutes.
  4. Local bus: Seasonal ski buses connect the station to multiple resorts at a low per-ride cost.

Luggage Forwarding (Takkyubin)

Japan's excellent luggage forwarding service (takkyubin) allows you to send ski bags and large suitcases ahead to your hotel, avoiding the hassle of carrying bulky gear on the Shinkansen. Services like Yamato Transport accept ski equipment and deliver reliably within 1–2 days.

With such convenient connections from Tokyo, there's very little friction in getting to Yuzawa — making it one of the world's most accessible premier ski destinations.
